Northrop Grumman Space Systems—Launch and Missile Defense Systems presents an excellent opportunity for a Principal Engineer Systems (25-446) to join our team of skilled and diverse professionals. This role, based in Colorado Springs, CO, or Huntsville, AL, is crucial in supporting the U.S. President, the Secretary of Defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and operational levels.
This position does not offer relocation assistance and requires on-site work with no remote options.
Position Overview:
The Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) program is a vital component of the Missile Defense System. It provides a critical operational platform that allows the U.S. president, the secretary of defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and tactical levels to systematically plan missile defense operations, monitor battle progress, and actively manage networked sensors and weapon systems to achieve global and regional mission goals. C2BMC offers a layered missile defense capability, delivering an optimized response to threats across all ranges and flight phases. It functions as a force multiplier by connecting, integrating, and synchronizing autonomous sensor and weapon systems and operations both worldwide and locally to enhance overall performance. Additionally, C2BMC is an essential part of all ground and flight tests that verify and demonstrate the missile defense systems current and future capabilities.
Develops and publishes corporate automation plans using cost-effective delivery technologies to support major corporate strategies. Performs complex software design activities that incorporate multiple technologies. Provides architectural guidelines for all software design efforts in current and future technological environments. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of technologies, planning, design, and analysis methodologies. Is responsible for the design and architectural standards for current and future software technological initiatives.
Essential Functions:
- Will be responsible for designing C2BMC AT and DEF SW solutions that meet customer requirements
- Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, be able to work independently, and possess the poise and flexibility needed to thrive in a highly dynamic environment
- Must be a self-starter who can initiate research and clearly document results
- Must have a thorough understanding of system software deployment architectures and continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) principles
- Must have shown leadership skills in software projects
- Ability to understand and decompose requirements to support verification and validation testing of software components
- Ability to generate detailed, repeatable, automated test procedures
- Ability to extract data to support analysis requirements
- Ability to create procedures that test functionality
- Ability to apply Agile and Lean Product Development principles and train others through a DevOps-style environment
- Experience should encompass all phases of the software development life cycle
- Candidates must have experience working in a collaborative team environment with other systems, software, and specialty engineers to develop solutions
- The candidate should possess an understanding and knowledge of the Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS)
- Must have demonstrated ability to lead a team of high-performing individuals across a multi-site, multi-discipline organization
- Ability to analyze high-level needs and, through a structured and logical approach, refine the need into an evolving architecture that results in a fielded product
- Capable of communicating effectively and clearly presenting technical approaches and findings
- Able to write and implement engineering plans within a project
- Proven experience interacting in a team environment is essential
Salary range in Colorado Springs: $100,300 - $150,500
Salary range in Huntsville: $105,400 - $158,000
Basic Qualifications:

- A Bachelor’s Degree in STEM Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field from an accredited university is preferred, along with 5 years of experience; or a Master’s degree (preferred) in a STEM related field with 3 years of relevant work experience; or a PhD in a related field with 1 year of relevant work experience
- Applicants must have a current, active in-scope DoD-issued Secret security clearance at the time of application, which is required to start
- Applicants must have a current active DoD 8140 certification at IAT Level II or higher (such as Security+, GSEC, SCNP, SSCP, CISSP, CISA, GSE, SCNA, etc.), which is required to start
- Willingness and ability to travel up to 10 to support business needs
- Should understand and possess demonstrable skills, including the ability to document architectures into system modelling tools, such as CAMEO or Enterprise Architect

Preferred Qualifications:
- Masters Degree in Systems Engineering

- VMware certifications are desired
- Will have previous experience designing automation pipelines to support efficient development in environments with rapidly changing requirements, design challenges that demand innovative solutions, fast-paced tasks, and tight deadlines

Additional Northrop Grumman Information:
Primary Level Salary Range: $100,300.00 - $158,000.00
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidates experience, education, skills and current spanet conditions.
Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
